THE CRUISE
What can we expect on our day cruise?
Once you have boarded the vessel, you will be offered pastries for morning tea and freshly brewed tea and coffee. After you have been introduced to the vessel facilities, safety information, our crew and your fellow passengers, Synergy will then depart on a two hour sail to the Great Barrier Reef. Upon arriving at the reef there will be ample time to snorkel (almost an hour and a half) before lunch is cooked on the barbeque and served to you at our dining table. After a delicious and relaxing lunch you will be invited to join our guided snorkelling tour or you may prefer to explore the reef at your own leisure (or simply soak up the sun on our spacious foredeck). Light refreshments including a fruit platter and dessert will be served prior to departing the reef and a gourmet cheese platter will be served on the voyage home. You will arrive back at Port Douglas at approximately 4.15pm.

What will we see at the reef?
Our sites are renown for hundreds of species of colourful reef fish (Finding Nemo has never been easier!). The sites also have numerous giant clams, sea cucumbers and starfish. On occasion we see small reef sharks and turtles. You will also spot at least fifty types of coral (there are over 460 species to choose from!). Our crew, reef compendium and library of reef books will assist you in learning more about this amazing ecosystem.

The average underwater visibility for the sites we visit is between 10 – 30 feet depending on tidal and wind conditions.

Do you cater for special dietary requirements?
Yes, as long as we are given notice when you book your trip we can cater for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets.

Where do you go on your daily cruise?
Our daily cruise to the Great Barrier Reef visits one of two sites at Tongue Reef, approximately 20 nautical miles from Port Douglas. Our Skipper will choose the best location according to the conditions on the day to maximise your experience.

Do you visit an island?
No, not on our scheduled day cruise. Synergy can visit the beautiful Low Isles on private charter.

Are the day trips suitable for guests (including children) who cannot swim?

The only way to see the reef from Synergy is by snorkelling.

How many snorkel sites do you visit in a day?
Synergy visits one site only to maximise your in-water experience. We spend almost 3.5 hours at one site.

When do you depart?
The vessel boards at 8.15am and departs as soon as all passengers have arrived.

When do you return?
Approximate return time is between 4.15 – 4.30pm

What happens if we are running late?
It is a good idea to call our reservations number to let us know if you think you might be late on 4050 0675. If you are later than 8.30am and we have not heard from you, we will assume you are a ‘no show’ and depart for the reef without you. This will incur a 100% penalty fee.

Can we bring our own drinks?
No. As a licensed vessel Synergy carries a range of soft drinks, bottled water and alcoholic beverages.

Is alcohol served on board the vessel?
Yes, a range of beverages are available for purchase.

If you have booked through your travel agent or local tour desk/hotel you will need to bring your tour voucher as well.

ACTIVITIES
We would like to scuba dive. How many dives can we do?
Synergy no longer offers scuba diving.

Do you offer floatation aids and tuition for nervous snorkellers?
Yes, Synergy has ‘noodles’ to assist with floatation plus in-water tuition for nervous/first time snorkellers. Wetsuits are great for floatation also and are available free of charge on the vessel.

Should we provide our own snorkeling gear, or do you supply it?
All snorkelling equipment including masks, snorkel and fins are provided and are of the highest quality.

Do you have prescription masks and is there an extra charge for these?
Yes, prescription masks are available for those who are short-sighted in –3, -5 and –8 which caters for most passengers. Underwater, objects are magnified by 25% so minimal short-sightedness is not a problem. There is no extra charge for the use of prescription masks on board the vessel.

One of our group probably won’t be snorkelling or swimming – do we get off the vessel at any time and will they still get to see the coral and fish?
The reefs we visit are around 10 metres (30 feet) deep. There is no island or sand cay for you to stand up. If you do not snorkel or swim but wish to see the coral and fish we recommend you choose a tour that offers a glass bottom boat.

Do you offer guided snorkeling?
Yes, our reef naturalist will show you the wonders of the reef with a complimentary guided snorkelling tour after lunch.

I have facial hair. Will this be a problem for snorkelling?
Gentlemen with moustaches are offered Vaseline petroleum jelly to smooth down hair which usually ensures a better seal of the mask.

SYNERGY'S FACILITIES
Do you have toilet facilities on board the vessel?

There are three passenger cabins on board, each with Ensuite and toilet facilities.

Is there a shower on board the vessel?
There is a freshwater shower at the back of the vessel to rinse off when passengers exit the water.

Is there plenty of areas to sit down?
Synergy has a large inside cabin seating up to 12 plus a dining table and lounge area on the aft deck. The spacious foredeck has nets to sit on and relax whilst you watch the world go by.

How do we get in and out of the water?
A ladder is placed into the water from the back of the boat for easy access in and out

CANCELLATIONS
Are there any penalties if we cancel our trip?
There are no penalties for canceling your trip as long as you notify us 24 hours prior (i.e., 8.30am the day before you are scheduled to go on Synergy). Should you cancel within the 24 hour period, a 100% cancellation fee applies. Synergy will endeavour to re-sell your seats – should this happen we will waive our cancellation fee.

FAQ:
If the weather is bad that day, could we swap to another day?
Only if you give us 24 hours notification.

Do you ever cancel the tour due to bad weather?
There are rare occasions where normal operations must be suspended including Gale Force Winds and Cyclone Warnings issued by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Synergy will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible should the event arise that we need to cancel our scheduled tour. You will not be charged for the tour should we cancel the trip.

Do you change your destination due to bad weather?
On occasion when high winds are prevalent, Synergy may need to change the itinerary to a sheltered location such as the Low Isles which is much closer to Port Douglas. This is at the discretion of our Skipper for the safety and comfort of our passengers and crew.

Are pets allowed to onboard?

Pets are not allowed to on our boats.

GENERAL INFORMATION
I think I might suffer from sea sickness. How can I avoid this?

Synergy has a very wide beam (width) of 30 feet making the journey comfortable and stable. For those unsure of their compatibility with ocean-going vessels, Synergy has travel-calm tablets on board the vessel, however it is a good idea to purchase some at the local pharmacy and take at least one hour prior to departing for the reef. Prevention is always better than cure.

Synergy crew are trained to assist guests who may be feeling unwell. There are a number of methods to assist you so please speak up and let us know if you are unwell so we can make you more comfortable.

What is the weather going to be like?
The million-dollar question!
A four-day forecast is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

Port Douglas is situated between Cooktown to Cardwell. Wind conditions over 20 knots are considered ‘fresh’.

The best weather advice can be gleaned by calling our reservations hotline or asking at your hotel.

What will the conditions be like at the reef if it is windy?
Depending on the tidal conditions of the day, the conditions at the reef can be flat calm (if there is a low tide in the middle of the day) or the boat can move around on a high tide. We will choose the best site on the day according to the conditions to make your day as comfortable as possible.

Is it going to rain while I am in Port Douglas?
Impossible to say but rain is most likely to occur in the wet season (Dec – April) and less likely in the dry season (May – Nov).

What will the temperature be?
Average Temperature, Rainfall and Humidity for Port Douglas is outlined in the chart below;

When is the 'wet season'? Can we still see the coral and fish?

Port Douglas is located in tropical Australia and has two seasons; the ‘wet season’ and the ‘dry season’. Officially, the wet season begins on 1st December and runs through until the end of April. During this time heavy rains may fall and the region may experience monsoonal conditions. Some reefs may expect lower underwater visibility, particularly those close to the coast. You can still view coral and fish underwater when it is raining however a lack of sunlight may make the reef system appear duller than usual.

What is the EMC?
The Environmental Management Charge (EMC) is a charge payable by commercial operators granted permits by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). Visitors to the reef participating in a tourist activity are now liable to pay the charge to the permit holder. The charge is currently $5.00 per person. The role of the operator in relation to the charge is to collect and remit the charge to the GBRMPA.

Do you run Christmas Day?
No. This is the one day of the year (apart from scheduled maintenance) Synergy does not operate.

Does Synergy offer overnight charters?
Due to the popularity of our day cruise, Synergy is no longer able to offer overnight trips.

Is there much difference between the Outer Reef and areas closer to the coast such as the Low Isles?
From Port Douglas there are a few different reef destinations you can visit. The general rule of thumb is that the further you are away from the mainland, the better conditions will be underwater to see the reef.

What is the likelihood we will encounter jellyfish during the time we are at the reef?
There are many types of jellyfish in the ocean, most of which are harmless but may cause some discomfort. Jellies such as ‘Blue Bottle or Portuguese Man O’ War’ can inflict a painful sting which may remain for up to an hour.

Other jellyfish common to tropical Australian waters include the Irukandji and the Box Jellyfish. These jellyfish can often be deadly and should be avoided. Box jellyfish are known to inhabit inshore waters and do not venture beyond a couple of kilometers from the coastline. Irukandji can be found out at the reef but stings are rare. Information regarding these jellyfish can be found on board our vessel or can be emailed on request.

To ensure the safety of our passengers, Synergy provides at no charge (and encourages the wearing of) full-bodied lycra suits which also offer protection from the sun.

Do you offer fishing?
No. There are specialist trips for fishing enthusiasts both to the reef and coastal estuaries.

We like the idea of a private charter to an island but we cannot afford to charter the entire vessel on our own. Do you offer share charters?
A private charter means ‘exclusive use of the vessel’ therefore we do not offer charters on a share basis.

Do you offer half-day charters?
Our private charter rate is based on full-day use. Whilst we are happy to take your group for a half day excursion, the full-day rate still applies.

Do you offer underwater camera hire?
Synergy sells disposable underwater cameras on the vessel for $35. These cameras have a built in flash and offer 27 shots. Passengers then pay for development of the film themselves at a film processing store. This is a separate charge from the cost of the camera.

Do you have lifejackets on board the vessel?
Synergy complies with all safety regulations as set out by Queensland Transport (Maritime Safety Division). This includes safety equipment such as life jackets, first aid, fire-fighting, life raft, communications systems and so on. Our staff are trained to the highest level to ensure your comfort and safety at all times.

Do you allow smoking?
Queensland now has strict laws on smoking areas. Smoking is restricted to the foredeck of the vessel, well away from other passengers. A specialised ashtray is provided by the crew. Discarding cigarettes over the side of the boat is strictly prohibited.

What if I forget to bring a towel?
Synergy offers a range of merchandise for sale on board the vessel including towels.

TRANSFERS/FINDING SYNERGY
We are driving ourselves to the vessel. Where do we go and is there plenty of parking available?

Synergy is located at Berth C21, Marina Mirage, Wharf Street, Port Douglas. There is ample free parking at the marina. After parking your car, make your way through the shops to the public wharf (there is only one!) and walk down the wharf. Synergy is located about 2/3rds of the way down on the left hand side.

Are transfers included in the fare price?
Transfers from Port Douglas hotels are included in the fare price. Transfers from outside Port Douglas are explained below.

Do you provide pick up and return transfers from Cairns and the northern beaches such as Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach and Palm Cove?
Yes. Transfers from the Cairns City area are $50pp return.
Transfers from the Northern Beaches (including Palm Cove) are $25pp return.
Transfers from Oak Beach are $20pp return.

Do you offer child rates for transfers?
No, as this service is outsourced, children travel at the same rate as adults.

Is it easy to get to Port Douglas from Palm Cove?
Port Douglas is approximately 30 minutes drive north of Palm Cove (and an hour north of Cairns) just off the Cook Hwy. The road into Port Douglas is well-signed. Once you turn off the highway onto Port Douglas Road, keep following the road until you see Port Street where you turn left. Port Street will lead you around to Marina Mirage.

A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation notice and at this stage the deposit is processed on your credit card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.

Please note we accept Visa and Mastercard and the credit card fees are:
1) 1.75% for the deposit amount.
2) 1.75% for the balance of payment.

If you are booking via phone, please first make sure you have read the terms and conditions of your selected sailing adventure. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.

Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental, trip or charter services.

Amendments
Please check the terms of each vessel to see whether amendment fees apply. Please also note that for some vessels an amendment is treated as a new booking and the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). In the case of boat rental/yacht charter, if the hire or number of days is increased, an additional deposit may be required, while reduction in rental periods or price may reduce the total, but the deposit amount will remain unchanged.

Vessel Capacity and fitness to charter (for Bareboats only)
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vessel you charter is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of passengers allowed is indicated next to each vessel on this website. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A boat or trip supplier can refuse to hire a vessel to any person who is in their opinion unfit to skipper or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
