Intrepid, a 45' Luxury Motor Cruiser, is the ultimate in bareboat charter yachts boasting a spacious, well designed interior with luxury fittings including Tasmanian Oak panelling and brass chandlery (that's boat talk for "stuff".)

With its 2 private cabins as well as loungeroom beds, this is the ideal vessel for families, couples or groups. This is comfortable cruising at it's best.

The large upper-level sundeck provides plenty of space for whale watching, entertaining or just soaking up some rays. The upper deck also has it's own wheelhouse so you can skipper the boat form either the upper deck or inside the cabin....wherever the party is!

Phoenix Cruisers are built on the highly acclaimed Hydrofield twin-tunnel hull which gives these boats incredible stability and uncompromised safety in open waters. Intrepid is one of the very few charter boats in Australia with 3C survey....more boat talk meaning that it can safely go places where other boats can't. (Hey, maybe we should rename it Enterprise!)
A well appointed bathroom (there's something about going to the 'head' that puts me off toilets in most other boats!) with house-type hot shower as well as a open and superbly equipped kitchen ('galley'....brings up images of slave boats, doesn't it?) makes Intrepid a seriously comfortable holiday home. The saloon includes a bar with seperate fridge, TV and Sound System.

The back deck is ideal for fishing or BBQing the ones that didn't get away! The large timber duckboard at the back of the deck is ideal as a enrty and exit platform for swimming, diving, fishing or boating.... or just sittin' with ya feet in the water!

Whale Watching: (July-Oct)

Renowned as the Whale Watching capital of the world, the sheltered waters of Hervey Bay offer your family and friends the unique opportunity to see these magnificent creatures at play...giant humpbacks taking a 'breather' on their annual migration south after calving in the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef. For 4 months each year from July to October they stop here to feed and play with their calves.

The Operator offers you the opportunity to experience this unforgetable sight from your 'own' spacious and luxurious yacht.

The Oceania project is one of Australia’s foremost ocean research organisations, The Operator would recommend a detour to their site for fascinating information about their work with whales, dolphins and ocean research.

The yacht, Moon Dancer, is the charter boat of choice for the Oceania project who rent her each year during whale watching season as their live- aboard base for the scientific research expeditions in the Hervey Bay area.

Great Sandy Straits Marina:
The Great Sandy Straits Marina is the home base and your departure point. Located in the Urangan Harbour in Hervey Bay, there are 176 berths which cater for the 8 metre to 30 metre vessels. Site facilities include toilets, showers and a laundry. There are restaurants, cafes and a boat brokerage within the harbour precinct, while The Hervey Boat Club will welcome you with a wholesome meal for a reasonable price or a quiet drink in the comfortable harbourside lounge. The harbour also contains two first class resorts - Great Sandy Straits Resort and The Outrigger resort.

How to get to location:
Flying: Fly to Fraser Coast airport - a 5 minute taxi ride from the marina. Both Jetstar and Virgin Blue have direct flights from Sydney with links from all other airports. Flights are often very cheap so it's well worth investigating.
Regional carrier Qantaslink has daily flights fro Brisbane with connections from all other centres.
Hervey Bay airport shuttle meets all flights and provides quick, cheap and friendly service for local transfers.

Driving: Follow the main highway north from Brisbane to the historic city of Maryborough (about 2 hours) then head to Hervey Bay….easy to find and well signposted. Hervey Bay is on the Fraser Coast with Fraser Island directly across the bay. The Great Sandy Straights marina is at Urangan, the southern township of Hervey Bay city.

There is also facilities at Tin Can Bay at the southern end of Fraser Island. For a Tin Can Bay departure, turn off the highway at Gympie, (site of Queenslands then biggest gold rush in the 1860’s) and head east to Tin Can Bay….very well signed roads will lead you straight to it.

Past Customer Testimonials

Ahoy Steve and Heather

Well, we certainly made the right choice in chartering one of your vessels... 4.5 star accommodation on water.

Our week sailing the Sandy Straits on "Morpheus" was without a doubt, one of the most relaxing and enjoyable holidays yet. With four adults on board, Morpheus proved to be comfortable, clean, easy to handle and with ample “mod cons” to keep everyone happy.

And The Great Sandy Straits has so much to offer... clear and clean to view the abundant wildlife of the water, crabbing for our lunch, fishing for our dinner, beautiful white beaches of Fraser Island just a quick trip in the tender across for a picnic, walk on the beach and chance to explore. And the most breathtaking sunsets to be enjoyed over drinks on the deck each night....just about perfect.

A big thank you Steve and Heather for your friendly personalised service and assistance (once you told us why the bilge pump alarm was going off, Trish could sleep easy), nothing was too much trouble for you and we actually looked forward to texting in each evening with our location.

Congratulations to both of you, (and Mitch of course who was sweet enough to tender us girls across to the boat when the fella’s decided they couldn’t wait to get on to the water) for the condition and presentation of Morpheus and the service you provided from our initial enquiry right through to the end of our holiday.

Forget camping and caravanning, you can do it all on the water. We will definitely be recommending The Operator to our many family and friends.

Hi Steve, Heather and Nicky

As a sailing destination Fraser Island and the Sandy Straits offer a cruising ground that is unspoilt, uncrowded, interesting and very accessible. We have just booked our family holiday again for the second year running with this operation for many good reasons. Having cruised the world for many years with my Meagan, we enjoy dealing with down to earth, like minded and professional operators such as Steve, Nicky and Heather. I can recommend them very highly indeed.

Had the time of our lives on our trip on Hervey Bay. We had so much fun we are coming back in 2008. Steve and Nicky made everything easy for our cruise. We saw lots of wildlife and beautiful scenery, the weather was perfect. See you all next year!

Debbie and Joe - Hollister California

After hiring boats up and down the Queensland coast for years. We decided to book with The Operator. It was so nice to sail on such a clean and well maintained boat, (Velella). We had a fabulous 5 days, the scenery is magnificent and the weather perfect. Thanks for everything, Steve & Heather. See you next year!

What a great trip! Being a novice and having never handled a boat before, we felt totally relaxed about it after finishing our briefing with Steve. Everything was so easy and it made for such a relaxing and fun holiday. The kids were never out of the dinghy and we were never off the top deck. Intrepid has so much room and is so comfortable just perfect for a family. Thanks for everything guys. We will definitely be back.

My name is Robin and my trusty partner is Shelley. In March 2007 we decided on a sailing holiday. After much research I chose The Operator as our bare boat charter company. I am pleased to report this decision proved to be a winner. We settled on "Velella" The 40 ft Seawind 1200 catamaran. This boat is simply awesome.

Steve introduced us to" Velella" and briefed use through detailed yet simple instructions of the "need to know" of the vessel. I found Velella extremely easy to sail. At times single handed even, as Shell was very occupied at some serious relaxing. The boat was set up with automatic pilot, and most of the controls were able to be operated from the cockpit, even raising and lowering the anchor. She almost sailed herself.

Steve made our holiday a most memorable and hassle free experience. The service offered was personal and very professionally run. An example of the superb service was when the water pump decided to stop doing its thing. Of course the boat was fitted with all safety alarms to let me know what was happening. I contacted Steve and in a few moments and by my description he was able to accurately diagnose the problem. We were a long way from Hervey Bay but sure enough first thing in the morning Steve arrived with the replacement part. In only a short time it was all fixed and we were on our way again. At no stage were we stuck.

I loved the freedom of being able to decide where to go for the day and When we could go. We would settle into a sheltered cove about 3.30 to 4.00, have a fish or crack open a very cold tinny. Yep, it does not get any better.

Steve, we wish to thank you and the friendly staff of The Operator for making our holiday so hassle free and sooooo much fun. To be sure to be sure I will come back and do it all again.

Regards
Robin and Shelley
